Masaaki Miyazawa, who served as the official photographer for Ise Jingu, has photographed the “Imperial Gift Horse” presented by His Majesty the Emperor. He also contributed a long-running series titled “Portraits of Thoroughbreds” to the official JRA publication Yushun, capturing many legendary racing moments through his lens.

Deeply captivated by the powerful beauty and elegance of thoroughbreds, Miyazawa transformed these noble animals into singular works of photographic art through this series, “Portraits of Thoroughbreds.”

The portraits were taken using a natural light setup, without strobes, against cloth-covered stable walls to create a neutral background. Each session was limited to between 5 and 15 minutes to minimize stress on the horses. A state-of-the-art, ultra-high-resolution camera with 150 million pixels was used, allowing every detail—from facial expressions to individual strands of hair—to be captured with astonishing clarity.
